Ah, Vermont; one of my favorite jurisdictions in America. Two of the most enchanting destinations include Burlingtonβa small first city with equal parts pleasant walking, college town, and wonderful viewsβand the Smuggler's Notch scenic roadβa drive through a mountain pass so tight that it has to be closed during the winter. It should only follow that the license plates be as wonderful. The designs haven't changed much through the modern vehicular history of the state, as it's far from broke [sic]. Identifiability: It's hard to miss this plate on the road. Colors: I'm a fan of this choice of distinct and serene kelly green not dissimilar from the US interstate signage. The clean white is an obvious choice to match. Typeface: The long bend in the '2' and the hiked up pants on the '5' and the 'P' partake in a quirky typeface for the serial that this writer believes to match the ethos of the state. The serif'ed font identifying "Vermont" offers a balance to the serial that I would appreciate in any plate design. Symbols: "Green Mountain State", the use of the color green, the maple tree almost ironically displayed in white. Straightforward, subtle. Clarity: All the component parts come together in a way that can be instantly recognized with no need for a gimmick. No questions are left unanswered. I cannot offer enough praise for this license plate. So simple, clean, purposeful, and unique. A formula oft imitated but an effect rarely matched. Overall, likely my favorite license plate.

A solid plate, this design has been going for years in different iterations, including typeface changes, palette adjustments, and short departures to feature bears or gold prospectors. Identifiability: Similar from a distance to NY's yellow plate, but it's probably unlikely to see the two in the same place Colors: The yellow is notable, and I'm a fan of 2 color palette.. specifically because the navy pairs well with the yellow. Could have easily copped out and gone with black. Typeface: A common theme to display the state name in a serif font, while having the motto use a third. I figure, why not? The relatively thin lettering works fine for the serial. Symbols: The divider shows the state flag, itself featuring the big dipper + north star. The stars work well and add depth to the design. I appreciate that the stars are a "mask" for the background instead of being white. This is probably my favorite part of the plate. "THE LAST FRONTIER" is a distinguished motto, kind of hard. Clarity: Very simple and straightforward, nothing to complain about. As always, I'm grateful for lack of tacky graphic design in the background. Overall, a high/mid tier plate with no glaring issues. Good on them for allowing the reputation of the state speak for itself.
